That's how many shift workers on duty evenings, nights, or in some rotating or otherwise irregular schedule the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates are in the workforce (or were in 2001). On top of the sleep problems this kind of off hours schedule produces, there is plenty of evidence that it can be hazardous to your health- a review published in 2003 lists gastrointestinal problems (specifically peptic ulcers), cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes. Shift work has also been linked to obesity and depression. In fact, "every physiological system has been noted to have increased problem with shift work in general," says Elizabeth Klerman, a physician in the division of sleep medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital and an associate professor at Harvard Medical School.... Then another one. Deep breathing might seem like a waste of time when you have a post op wheeling down the hall, one patient waiting for discharge and an ER nurse on hold, ready to give you report on your new admission-not to mention your other patients who, hopefully, are holding their own. (Please let them be holding their own!) But unless you get control of your thoughts, you're going to spin your way through your shift without ever really knowing what to do next. You'll lurch from one crisis to another, and then go home with your head still spinning, wondering if you truly did everything that needed to be done.... Wed, 4 Nov 2009 09:15:00 GMT Considerations When Staffing the Cath Lab http://www.cathlabdigest.com/articles/Considerations-When-Staffing-Cath-Lab Cath Lab Digest Volume 17, Issue 9 Author: Melissa Knybel, Clinical One Choosing to staff a cath lab at a bare minimum, in terms of personnel and skill levels, is not sufficient to meet the variable demands placed on this department and the healthcare needs of its patients. To avoid such a scenario, cath labs should have a specific staffing plan in place to improve retention, encourage training and continuing education, drive recruitment based on facility needs, and outline the staffing ratios and required skills needed to safely and efficiently operate the cath lab. Yet staffing today's cath lab is both an art and a science. Labs staff with one credential or a mix of credentials, vary in the tasks staff are permitted to perform and can employ different numbers or types of staff for similar situations.
